WHY OILS ?

It doesn't seem that long ago that Oil (whether natural skin oils or Oil based products) was demonized in the beauty industry. Many believed Oils to be categorically "bad" for our skin due to the association with acne and the messaging around that belief but, this couldn't be further from the truth.

If the thought of putting oils on your face brings really bad breakouts, think again.  In fact, according to top dermatologists, facial oils may be that missing step in your beauty routine.

The key is to recognize that not all facial oils are the same.

Look for oils with a smaller molecular sizelike argan, squalane and jojoba oils. If the molecular structure of an oil is too big, it can't penetrate through the top layer of the skin.

Many oils have anti-inflammatory properties as well, helping to quell irritated skin. Argan and yangu oils are ideal for irritations that follow use of popular anti-aging products such as retinol or alpha hydroxy acids. Geranium oil is also fabulous at reducing redness from rosacea, as well.

Oils have particular functions they perform in the nourishing spectrum. Oils that are derived from plants and Leaf extracts are more nutrient rich and are widely available for use. Oils that are easily broken down and emulsify easily such as jojoba and squalene without challenging the acid mantle are more suited as removal products. The best use for oils can be determined by its consistency, for example, creams will work best with lighter oils like rosehip or apricot, and these can give you ultra smooth skin and reduce fine lines on the face.

Thankfully, we're more educated and skin-literate now, recognizing oils for their many benefits! There is literally to many to put into one article but heres just a couple:

Protect your Skin: Because oils are lipophilic, they can penetrate deep into the skin, trapping water and other moisturizing goodness in. Applying on top of a water based Serum is ideal.  Some oils also help to fortify and strengthen our own natural skin barrier. This is especially important for big city dwellers who need extra protection against pollutants and smog, a known source of unwanted wrinkles. On a cold winter day, using a product with rosehip seed oil, which is highly concentrated with antioxidant ingredients, would be a definite win-win.

Help Shrink Pore size: Higher-end oils such as macadamia, jojoba, and camellia actually pull out grime and fats from pores, making them appear smaller and less noticeable. But be warned: The proof is in the formula. Avoid cheap versions of oil. The quality of oils is very important.

The types of oils and their benefits are vast, so pick from a brand you trust and  give different oils a chance. picking the right type of face oils

It's important to also note that both moisturizer and face oil are equally important when it comes to maintaining a healthy, hydrated skin. The skin needs 70% water and 30% oil to maintain its balance. A good oil not only helps the skin retain the water thats put into it, but also adds extra nourishment to promote a healthy glowing skin and reduce fine lines and discolouration on the face.
Whether it be for cleansing, treating or protecting your skin, oils are a must have.
